Marking his return, Wheesung is the first artist for the Dokkun Project, one of myriad project albums this season. Thankfully, “Masterpiece of You” isn’t a ballad, but a mid-tempo slow jam, and still as swoon-worthy as Wheesung’s best.
Musically, there isn’t much to wow you, just a piano, some drum sounds and persistent hand claps. For songs like these, the music isn’t supposed to stand out, but act as a vehicle for the singer and the lyrics. Wheesung has a great range and a good falsetto, both of which are missing here. What is here, however, are clever vocal tricks and joy from Wheesung. He dips into bass territory early on, does double time singing here and there and enough “heh’s” and “whoop’s” to help visualize an in-studio MV in your mind. And when he finally does belt out “I love you”, you can’t help feeling happy for him and a little jealous of her because you know the feeling is genuine.
“Masterpiece of You” is full of joy in love, with Wheesung loving what he’s great at. His return to singing could not be better than “Masterpiece of You”, a happy “I love you” track with wonderful singing by one of K-Pop’s best singers.
