Artist/Single: C-Clown and Ali – “It Was Like That Then”
Genre: Ballad
Release Date: April 02, 2013

Rookie group C-Clown is relatively new. And under a smaller entertainment company like Yedang, it’s not a shocker that they haven’t quite made a significant statement for many. Label mate Ali on the other hand is quite the opposite. So to have a trained veteran (of sorts) with a bit of weight to her name hop on to a collaboration with the group’s Rome, Kangjun, and T.K for their joint single “It Was Like That Then” is always a bonus for all, especially the newest generation in K-Pop.

“It Was Like That Then” is a very common ballad with a very common structure. Kangjun and Ali take control as the lead vocalists, while T.K (who helped pen this song) and Rome cover the rap sections. What I found enjoying most about this single was not so much the singing, although pretty fine, but the rap.

While not nearly on par with the legit rappers of Korea, Rome and T.K still managed to bring a solid rap presence to “It Was Like That Then” that didn’t feel contrived or misplaced like what happens with larger label boy bands. The flow was there and it really just felt very classic. The song itself is verging on forgettable, but the effort and execution was enjoyable to listen to.
