Genre: Dance, Pop, Idol
Release Date: April 26, 2013
I’ve spent a lot of time poking fun at the torrential downpour that is 4minute, but I think it’s finally time to give up this one-sided feud and accept them for who they are. HyunA and Co. is a hot mess with little melodic tendency and even less tact and putting effort into pointing that out is nothing but time wasted. In order to analyze the essence of 4minute we must give in and embrace the sexy swag.
As a whole, ‘Name is 4minute‘ functions much like the previous pinnacle of their career, ‘Hit Your Heart‘, down to the Engrish title. It begins with a sluggish intro track that’s almost too epic to function in which the group introduces themselves to us, you know, in case we forgot what we were listening to. After that lovely introduction they turn it around and ask what your name is.
For a 4minute track, “What’s Your Name” is very relaxed, like they’ve finally run out of fucks to give and this is a good sound for them. Gayoon only reaches for notes she can hit, reducing the screeching factor, and HyunA talks her way through the chorus so she’s prominently featured without trying to quote unquote rap. The result is a cohesive, bouncy single that is altogether pleasant.
4minute continues this chill vibe with “Whatever” that switches gears after the chorus to an anthem-esque march that somehow melts seamlessly back into an amped up version of the melodic first half. The current trend in K-Pop to mash several different songs into one has wielded not exactly pleasing results (ahem, Girls’ Generation). But if this persists 4minute’s nonchalant finesse that builds two distinct sounds and then blends them together is not a bad format. I never thought I’d say this about 4minute but other groups should definitely take note.
Overall, ‘Name is 4minute’ surpasses expectations. They have finally translated their manic yet blasé attitude into their music without the result seeming trashy and disjointed. And despite the fact that the album sounds like 90s grunge was put through a pop processor and came out messy yet lacquered, the sound works for them.

*there is a 0.25 bonus for every album. The logic is that, if every song were “pretty good”, it’s a 4-star album.
