Artist/Single: VIXX – “Hyde”
Genre: Dance, Pop, Idol
Release Date: May 20, 2013
It’s been a year since VIXX busted on to the k-pop scene in all of their prismatic glory. To celebrate this milestone, they’ve made their fourth comeback — except “Hyde” loses the flair that makes them standouts. All of VIXX’s past releases have been impressive, so why does “Hyde” leave a bitter taste in my mouth?
“Hyde” is not a bad song. It doesn’t leave me with ringing ears or a massive headache. It doesn’t make me wish I’d never heard it. The problem with it lies in the fact that it’s far from memorable. After watching the music video a couple of times upon its release, I found myself not being able to remember the song later in the day — and that’s never a good sign. Successful music should always leave the listener with a lasting, positive impression.
The concept of “Hyde” isn’t great, either. It’s a rehash of elements we’ve seen before. While I normally wouldn’t be picky about that, it’s particularly upsetting to see VIXX go this route. Since debut, they’ve stood out in that there are no clear comparisons that can be made between them and existing groups. With “Hyde,” though, they seem to have digressed and made a pit-stop in generic boy group land.
Take a plain song and a confused concept and the result is rather lackluster. Their Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde concept is meant to show off a new side of the group, but instead represents a larger conceptual divide. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — VIXX’s past songs have all been great. I’m confident they’ll get back on track: they just have to figure out what direction to go in and stick with it.
